Bookfellow is a companion for books you already own. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have when you visit bookfellow.io or contact us. Questions: [email protected].

1. Who we are

Bookfellow (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates bookfellow.io and related services. Bookfellow is a companion for books you are reading or listening to — it helps you remember, reflect, and return to titles you already own. It is not a substitute for reading or listening to the book itself.

2. What this policy covers

This policy describes how we collect, use, and share information when you:

  • visit bookfellow.io,
  • contact us by email, or
  • use Bookfellow products and features.

A separate Terms of Service governs your use of Bookfellow. If this policy conflicts with a signed agreement with you, that agreement controls.

3. Information we collect

3.1 Information you provide

Depending on what is available on the site, we may collect:

3.2 Information collected automatically

When you use the site or app, we may automatically collect:

  • Device and browser information (type, operating system, general settings)
  • Log data (IP address, pages viewed, timestamps, referring URL, crash or error reports)
  • Cookies and similar technologies (see Section 8)

We use this information to operate, secure, and improve Bookfellow.

3.3 Voice and images

If you use voice or image features:

  • Audio you submit for transcription or conversation is processed to provide the feature. We do not keep raw audio after processing unless you explicitly save a recording (if that option exists).
  • Photos you submit for text extraction (for example, a marked passage) are processed to extract text. We do not keep the original image after processing unless you choose to save it.

Extracted text may be stored as part of your notes or companion session, subject to your controls.

4. How we use information

We use information to:

  • provide, maintain, and improve Bookfellow;
  • create and deliver companion content bounded by your marked progress (spoiler-safe by design);
  • process waitlist sign-ups, accounts, subscriptions, and purchases;
  • communicate with you about the service, security, and lawful requests;
  • detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, and technical issues;
  • comply with law and enforce our terms.

We may use aggregated or de-identified data that cannot reasonably identify you for analytics and product improvement.

5. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information.

We may share information with:

  • Service providers who help us run Bookfellow (for example: hosting, email delivery, payment processing, customer support tools, and technology partners that process requests on our behalf). They may use information only to perform services for us, subject to contractual protections.
  • Professional advisors (lawyers, accountants) under confidentiality obligations.
  • Authorities when required by law, legal process, or to protect rights, safety, and security.
  • Successors in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (you will be notified if required by law).

We do not publish a public list of every vendor or internal system we use. Our providers may change as the product evolves.

6. AI and automated processing

Bookfellow uses automated and AI-assisted processing to generate companion material, answer questions about books you have unlocked, organize notes, and similar features.

  • Processing is tied to your account, your titles, and your marked progress.
  • We design features so companion content does not spoil material you have not reached yet.
  • Do not submit sensitive personal information (health, financial account numbers, government IDs, etc.) in chat, notes, or voice features unless you choose to — we are not designed to collect it.

7. Data retention

We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes above, including:

  • Account data — while your account is active and for a reasonable period after closure (for backups, disputes, and legal compliance).
  • Billing records — as required for tax and accounting.
  • Support email — as long as needed to resolve your request and maintain a reasonable support history.
  • Waitlist email — until you unsubscribe, we remove you, or the waitlist is retired.

We may retain aggregated or de-identified data longer.

8. Cookies and analytics

We may use essential cookies required for security and basic operation.

When we enable analytics or marketing tools, we will use cookies or similar technologies to understand how visitors use the site. Where required, we will provide choices (for example, a cookie notice or consent mechanism). You can also control cookies through your browser settings.

9. Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:

  • access a copy of personal information we hold about you;
  • correct inaccurate information;
  • delete certain information or close your account;
  • opt out of marketing emails (every marketing email will include an unsubscribe link);
  • limit certain processing (where applicable law provides).

To exercise these rights, email [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity. We will not discriminate against you for exercising lawful privacy rights.

California residents: We do not sell personal information. You may have additional rights under the CCPA/CPRA; contact us to submit a request.

Other U.S. states: Similar state privacy laws may apply; contact us with your state and request.

10. Children

Bookfellow is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

11. United States

Bookfellow is a United States company. Our service is offered to customers in the United States. Information is processed in the United States.

12. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

13. Third-party links

The site may link to third-party sites (for example, app stores or publisher pages). Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this one.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on bookfellow.io with a new “Last updated” date. Material changes may also be communicated by email or in-product notice. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
